Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning and essence of the lived experience of poor older men living alone and to have a better understanding of their experiences. To achieve this purpose, the phenomenological approach in qualitative studies was adopted. The qualitative data were collected from in-depth interviews with 10 older men participants living in Gwangju. The data were analyzed by Colaizzi`s analytic method, and 22 themes and 6 theme clusters were emerged from the analysis. The theme clusters of living alone experienced by poor older men were as follows£º``living alone reluctantly``, ¡®a poor life``, ``relieving loneliness and boredom¡¯, ``feeling anxious about the future``, ``balancing between dependence and independence``, ``keeping going``. The essence of the lived experience of poor older men living alone was identified as ``sustainment``. Based on these results, this study offers suggestions for supportive services for poor older men living alone, considering their unique experiences and concerns.
